The Kenya National Prayer Breakfast
The First Kenya “National Prayer Breakfast” (NPB) took place in May, 2003, shortly after President Mwai Kibaki came into office. The Prayer Breakfast Movement started in the US Congress 64 years ago. The Prayer Breakfast Movement in Kenya, which is modeled after that of the US, dates back 30 years, when a small group of men started meeting in Nairobi with the aim of ultimately starting a “National Prayer Breakfast.”
The Kenya National Prayer Breakfast, which is sponsored by the Kenyan Parliament, and organized with the help of volunteers from the Small Prayer Breakfast groups, is traditionally held on the last Thursday in May. The 14th annual NPB took place in May 2016.
While the Kenyan Parliament is the Principal sponsor of the NPB, the organization, planning and execution of the event is anchored in the small prayer groups that meet weekly within the city of Nairobi. The groups that carry the vision and mission of the Prayer Breakfast meet weekly in Muthaiga Club (Thursdays), Nairobi Club (Tuesdays), Qaribu Inn, Loresho (Fridays) and in Parliament (Wednesdays). The other prayer groups include the “Boulevard Group” (Wednesdays) and a new group in Karen (Thursdays). The people who meet in these prayer groups jointly come together and help to execute the annual Kenya National Prayer Breakfast.
The Prayer Movement behind the “Kenya National Prayer Breakfast” has been, is, and continues to be a “work-in-progress.” The many volunteers who give of their time and resources are very passionate about the Movement and are determined to utilize the forum to transform the leaders of this country through reverence to God. The vision and mission for the Movement is very clear:
Vision: “A National Leadership that cohesively brings the Country together under God.”
Mission: “Using Influence as a strategy in reaching out to National Leaders to positively transform Kenya and beyond.”
